Gov. Ron DeSantis visited Key Biscayne Thursday to announce seven grants totaling $22.7 million for projects to improve water quality in Miami-Dade County. The largest of the awards is a $14.5 million grant to Miami-Dade County to improve water quality and reduce pollution. But perhaps the most eye-catching award went to the city of North Miami, which landed $2.3 million to convert septic tanks to sewer connections. In other words, yes, a county of 2.7 million people, one that markets itself as an international hub of trade, finance and technology, still has tens of thousands of homes connected to septic tanks rather than sewer lines.
