Dr. Edward L. Whigham Elementary School in Cutler Bay, Florida

This is not a good school to enroll a child that has a disability and has an IEP. The office personnel is the worse, from the Principal, Assistant Principal Mrs Colzie to the middle eastern that answers the calls in the office. I have been asking for a meeting with the office personnel due to my daughters IEP and the accommodations and resources she needs since January and I have been getting ignored. The Assistant Principal who is the person in charge of these things does not return nor calls or emails and when she does she’s rude and her excuse is she has a lot of work and no help. It’s a shame that a school would hire a staff that is rude to a parent of a child with autism. All I want is to inquire on why should my child have to retake Kindergarten when this school NEVER followed the recommendations that where instructed in the IEP? I was just informed in January how my child is struggling and might be retained. My child is overwhelmed, her self esteem is low because she knows she cannot read or blend words. The worse part is that she knows that she might be retained, and the school don’t care. The teacher has always communicated with about my daughters struggles but like he says he is just a teacher he has to do his job. Is why I complaint to the District, sent emails from the superIntendent Carvalho to the Senator, Mayor so they be aware how Whigham Elementery don’t obey the IEP and don’t follow through with the child’s accommodations. It’s simple if the school that your enrolling your child with an IEP don’t offer the accommodations that is DESCRIBED in the IEP the school should let the parent know right away, not wait into middle of the year to inform the parent when your child is failing! This school also doesn’t have good safety rules when it comes to picking up a child. The guard in the entrance takes your ID writes your name on the list and asks where you going? You tell them the office. You go to the office and just tell the kid let’s go and you walk out with that child. No one in the office asks who you are, your ID and check that child’s Emergency contact card to see if that person is authorized to pick up the child. So I ask you what is the point of having a good grade as far as school when have they have these problems? Is why I have reported them and will continue to do so If things are not a done how they should!!! The children with a disability are not any different then those without disability all children are the same just unique in their own way.

i go to this school, i think most of the teachers are very nice. all of my teachers have been very nice. i think it is a great school. my teacher now is Ms.Cummings (5th grade wave teacher)
